lol so confused i thought the dog died but it’s somehow alive

I believe I see a theme. Woman, unbothered in nature without man. She is lonesome, but safe. In this life she has a purpose and her animals rely on her. She tries so hard to surrounded herself in nature to avoid the haunting of her past. In this blocked off wall, she can become anybody she desires without societal pressure telling her otherwise. For a woman without a man is peace.

“It hadn’t dawned on me that my former life had come to a sudden end. I knew it, that is, but only in my head, so I didn’t believe it. It’s only when knowledge about something slowly spreads to the whole body that you truly know. I know too that I, like every living thing will have to die some day, but my hands, feet and guts didn’t know. That’s why death seems unreal.”

Interesting start to the book but I’m curious to why the narrator isn’t more worried about her missing sister? There is a small strand of hope that I don’t seem to understand or see. I’m assuming this wall is metaphoric, although i don’t see how the people on the other end play any role. I hope she doesn’t eat the cow.
