Chapter 6 focuses on comparisons with European welfare states. I expected it to be about how much better Europe is on the topic. And it acknowledges that. But the real point is, with increased immigration, Europe it headed toward a more American model. In short, self-destructively racist.

Not much progress. Wilson brings a lot of social science research to back up the basic theories that I've long accepted (and that I think a show like The Wire does a great job in making concrete and relatable): racism and economic exploitation have destroyed the social fabric of urban and working class communities. My policy solution: redistribute wealth to make broader investments that improve things for all.

Economic isolation of inner city led to social and cultural degradation. Residents in surveys show interest in working but jobs just aren't there. And then they end up shafted in the jobs they do find.
