Me siento muy cómodo con esta obra de Roth. No he tenido esos momentos sublimes que te golpean y te agitan. Pero es una lectura que me está atrapando, narrativamente es muy buena. La construcción de los personajes es exquisita, lo mejor de la obra.

Lo estoy disfrutando.

Empezamos con Roth, llevaba tiempo con ganas de leerle. Se que es la segunda parte de una trilogía. Pero me interesaba este sobremanera.

La política es la gran generalizadora—me dijo Leo—, y la literatura la gran particularizadora [...] En tanto que artista, el matiz es tu tarea. Tu tarea no consiste en simplificar. Aun cuando decidieras escribir de la manera más sencilla, a lo Hemingway, la tarea sigue siendo la de aportar el matiz, elucidar la complicación, denotar la contradicción.

Eso es lo que queda cuando todo ha pasado, la tristeza disciplinada del estoicismo. Esto es el enfriamiento. Durante tanto tiempo es tal el calor, todo en la vida es tan intenso... y entonces, gradualmente, el calor se reduce, llega el enfriamiento y luego las cenizas. El hombre que me enseñó a boxear con un libro ha vuelto para demostrarme cómo puedes boxear con la vejez.

The second instalment of the Zuckerman trilogy lets us behind the curtain of 1940-50s America, where -after the conclusion of WW2 - McCarthyism is just starting to rear its ugly head. Once again we are invited to consider how politics shapes the fate of a larger than life Newark inhabitant.

So far?Extraordinary. Every sentence stretched to the seams with beauty and meaning. Roth’s eye is a needle and this is art!

If you see this Guy, ‘Revival’ is gonna be the book I read next.

Wahl: Sylphid ausziehen zu lassen od. er geht. 2 Tage Trennung, bis Eve sich auf d. Knie vor Ira wirft. Ira erkennt in Eve momentan d. Chance „unangetastet“ wg. polit. Überzeugungen zu bleiben. Ira heiratet  Stummfilmschauspielerin -Eve Frame, die 3 Ehen hinter sich hat und eine erwachsene  Tochter Sylphid aus der 2. Ehe. Laut Murray hat Ira in eine Familie mit toxischer Mutter-Tochter-Beziehung eingeheiratet, die ihn in die Knie zwingen wird. Es geht um die politischen Überzeugungen von Ira, Wahlkampf, Niederlage von Wallace gegen Truman. (Weiter im Kommentar)

Und wieder erzählt Nathan Zuckermann die amerikanische Chronik. Nach Jahren seinen 90-jährigen Englischlehrer Murrey Ringold getroffen, dessen Bruder -Ira Ringold- er bewundert hat. Ira Ringold- Schulabbrecher, der nicht mal lesen und schreiben konnte,  der sich durchs Leben bis zum Radiostar von "frei und tapfer" durchgeboxt hat; der den Weg von einem Apolitischen bis zum überzeugten Kommunisten gegangen ist.

I'm enjoying it but, like most Roth books, boy is it dense

Solid walls of text with long, often convoluted and semi-repetitious sentences mean often having to read twice to fully comprehend.

It's really bloody good though. And not as depressing as American Pastoral (so far)

No obstante a Roth le exijo más que a otros , es lo que ocurre con los grandes
