Eulelie's past is catching up with her in the form of the mother of her son's intended. Imagine, she used to be named Doralee Washington, was dirt poor, and took her name from the Anglo woman for whom she worked because she thought is sounded like the name of a high-born southern woman.

Eulelie Giles is a black woman passing as a white woman passing as a black woman. That statement alone caused me to continue reading this book.
