The chapter on toys is heartbreaking. I grew up, in the late 50s and the 60s, with baby dolls, a Fort Apache set, dress-up dolls, a cap gun, a tea set, a chemistry set (with things that would be considered too dangerous today!), a train set. My playmates were mostly my cousins, girls and boys. When a kid I met in a store said there were "girls' toys" and "boys' toys", I thought she was making it up.
