It's just lazy world-building. Bell uses shortcuts wherever possible just to avoid creating a realistic world. 25 years after the apocalypse and they have a functioning power grid and apparently working distilleries. Plus everyone is nice, not at all a dog eats dog type of world. Plus the main character is 15yo who is so much more competent than other more experienced survivors. But it has its moments. 2.5/5. I just started yesterday. So far, the post-apocalyptic realism is extremely lacking. E.g., At least 15 years after the apocalyptic event, she just finds a parked Jeep by a beach and drives off - 1) regular gas would stop working after around three years, 2) the tires - come on, 15 years - would be flat. And there, so far, never seems to be a lack of food. She just waltzes into a convenience store and hauls food.

This is very compelling so far. Temple is a great protagonist.

This is shockingly good. I’ve read a bunch of 5 star books recently, but it’s been a while since a book gripped me so tightly. Glaringly gritty, but also sublimely eloquent.

The writing in this is just bad. I really don't like how the dialogue isn't in quotation marks. Here's me hoping it gets better soon...

Where you been? he asks.
I been on a date.
A date? He begins to laugh heartily. So the warrior princess of the wastes inspires a young man’s fancy.
It ain’t funny.
this scene was so great

Listen, I been meanin to ask you—what state’re we in?
Little girl, on your travels you happen to notice some dead people walkin around? What state are you in? I’d say you are in a state of denial.

It don’t seem right, she continues, the destruction of what a family loves—or even what a family hates for that matter. A household’s got its own spooks, and it ain’t for strangers to come bullying in to exorcise them.
i am really enjoying these temple-isms (aka the name i've just now given to temple's very specific set of principles and philosophies)

See, it’s a daily chore tryin to do the right thing. Not because the right thing is hard to do—it ain’t. It’s just cause the right thing—well, the right thing’s got a way of eluding you. You give me a compass that tells good from bad, and boy I’ll be a soldier of the righteous truth. But them two things are a slippery business, and tellin them apart might as well be a blind man’s guess.

Stopped bcs its not engaging in the current apocaliptic situation, hits to much home when I just want to read about 'something that doesnt exist' / other worldly

Weird. But I guess all zombie books have to come with some... weirdness. Temple is likable, is she really 15, tho?!

A good amount of pages in and I still don't like the plot nor the style, and the protagonist is still as unlikable as ever.

Not many women would be offered a bra in an apocalypse scenario and decline. That is probably the most bizarre thing in the entire book so far.
