That musique of thy promises,
Not threats in Thunder may
Awaken us to our just offices;
What in thy booke, thou dost, or creatures say,
That we may heare, Lord heare us, when we pray.

Except you 'enthrall mee, never shall be free,
Nor ever chast, except you ravish mee.

The introduction includes one of the most ridiculous lines I've ever read: "Human beings no doubt would cease to be human beings unless they were inconsistent; but the inconsistency of the Elizabethans exceeds the limits permitted to man. Their elements fly off from one another wildly.... By what perverse magic were intellectual ingenuity and theological ingenuousness intertwined in John Donne?"
