This book is taking forever to read. So far, I have known exactly zero things that this book describes. I love finding new areas of history I need to know about. I love presidential history and I did not realize Zachary Taylor was a general under Polk! I've learned so much about Navajos that I had to stop and think what I knew before, and the answer was... " they are a Native American tribe." End of list.

Hampton Sides is a MASTERFUL storyteller. In this remarkable book, Sides interweaves the theadlines of the three central characters: Kit Carson, Captain Steven Kearney (leader of the Army of the West), and Narbona, a great Navaho Chief. Their paths will intersect in 1846 in the US - Mexican War, initiated by President James Polk, who wanted all of the southwest for America - from sea to shiny sea. Fascinating.
