Status Updates From Impossible Love (Spring Fever)

Just as myths and fairy tales tell us, when the king and the queen are separated or in conflict, all the kingdom suffers and the subjects, ie., the children in this case, necessarily feel the effects of such discord. The child does not yet know that there are other “kingdoms,” other families where things are different.

His lover was gone, but she had re-awakened a vivifying energy from his forgotten idealistic youth, and gradually he began to want to redirect his life in accordance with some of these ideals translated into adult terms. On one level he had truly died, but not in the way he had imagined or threatened. He had died to his own fears, and through an impossible love he began to know what it was to be a free man.

He was a man who had lived only through ap- pearance, prestige, status, and power. The ideals of his youth had given way to cynicism, an obsession with money, and belonging to the right class of people. Falling in love with a criminal was the worst thing that could happen to his pride and vanity, but it made him “die” to certain false values and illusions about himself and, most of all, meet his own criminal self.

They had, unknowingly, very different visions about what the truth was and which truth mattered most. Yet, both their truths would resonate down through the ages—she the Spokeswoman for Love, he the Spokesman for Logic and Reason, each separate and exceptional at the end as they had been in the beginning.

According to the author, the glory had gone to his head and he gave in to the twin temptations of pride and lust. But the role of seducer did not last long. In spite of his cynical intentions, Abelard fell into his own trap. He fell madly, passionately in love.
