5: goes through the military industrial complex and its connections to all kinds of public products, the military, etc

4: gendered issues within the prison system both in how men are viewed and treated differently and in how women are viewed and treated differently

3: goes through both how prison itself was a reform to violent corporal punishment, and then various reforms to prison systems that have happened and also “unhappened” (adding college courses and then taking them away)

Second part is about the parallels and evolutions between slavery and prison (institutional racism) (I’m really summarizing obviously this is a big section with a lot going on)

Keeping track for myself: first few bits are establishing both the rapid growth of the prison system and societies views of prisons as inherent and necessary through our media consumption and our fear of “evildoers” (Bush/Reagan)
