I'm slowly getting through this book because I'm so easily distracted with Reddit, Facebook, and instagram for their immediate gratification of giggles.

Really enjoying the re-read of this. Might move this up to my second-favorite Helprin novel.

I'd forgotten how frequently this slips into magical realism. And I love it for that. Perhaps that's what's been missing from his last two novels.

Really enjoying returning to Helprin's first novel (after about 30 years). It's wonderful. A great reminder that he actually CAN write. Or at least he could. You can see themes and images to which he'd return in later books put down here in embryonic form. Why his more recent novels are such wordy messes is a mystery.

Revisiting Helprin's first novel to remind myself of when he could write.
