‘Spectral Light’ by Amy Irvine reminds me camping at BC Hydro in Frazier River valley - my dog bulleted from 3 am slumber and dolphin punched a hole in the tent trying to get out, hackles up and shaking but still silent. A brown bear walked through our site to where neighbors left food out. I screamed at the dog and it escalated enough noise that people with guns swarmed us within minutes.

The New West: Did he try and talk to the bear? Did he project peaceful energy?
The Old West: I hope he shot the son of a bitch.

Kind of digging the article on orbital debris removal, hope it has a happy ending. Most of these articles seem to be about biosphere impoverishment and are serious downers. Important of course, but a couple of lighter pieces would be nice. You know it’s dark when the piece on prosopagnosia was a welcome relief.

“Since it’s a superstition among poachers that letting birds go free ruins a site, the unmarketable species are torn up and dropped on the ground or left to die in the nets.” Humans are so cruel

in a shocking turn of events, reading about the public's response to same-sex behavior in animals is an Experience. it is not a good one.

Apparent lack of progress on this book should not be taken as lack of interest. This is a book of short science and nature pieces that are individually pretty interesting so far. However, I currently am reading this only on my ipod when I am waiting on line or in the car waiting for someone.

Just finished three incredibly depressing medical articles in a row...might have to go kill myself now. You couldn't have put some happy thoughts in between those, MR?

So far, my favorite story is the one that describes how to survive free-falling from 35,000 feet. Might come in handy some day.
