There is no way they let her check 41 boxes in a commercial flight 😂🤔 I dunno maybe, it was in a non-911 world, and her fiance was able to wait at the gate with her.

Ah there we have it. The logical response of an immortal trying to stop an antichrist - assassination. There's no way this wouldn't cross his mind in centuries. I don't buy "I just want to tell them about the gospel"
It also makes Asher seem more like a delusional dude who is just a normal guy who decides he's been called by God. This is really really common

I know the Internet was in its infancy, or at least its toddler years. But I find it very weird and incomprehensible that this lady doesn't do A SINGLE INTERNET SEARCH for this information
She knows how to Google (although Google isn't a popular thing yet), but she doesn't search for laval, Hitler, the wandering Jew? Instead spending 3 days in a library searching for obscure texts. This is not an unknown story

This is supposed to be set in the future, a few years past 2000. Claudia wonders if she can convince Asher that the president of the US is an "equally valid prospect for a future puppet of Satan" and well ..George W ? Lol (Asher thought it was Reagan for a while - how completely laughable - according to Claudia who absolutely loves Regan)
The author couldn't know about how 9/11 would change things so much

The second time she mentions an Italian man being hot like Antonio Banderas. The noted talian actor. Oh wait 😂

I just want to say...the fact of a boomer author (the character would seem to be gen x I think) writing in horror multiple times of Roma people existing, and how dangerous new York is at night, only to have the character thwarted by basic Internet security (not to mention handing over their passport like it's normal)
is telling and also kinda funny.
It's hard to tell if the author is aware of the irony

It's definitely a different read this time. I'm seeing different layers of the author's beliefs and influences.(Regan has been mentioned at least 5 times and we're about halfway through) Seeing how Asher would most likely be a delusional fanatic not an actual immortal. How the book tries to set up Claudia as a normal American but also casts this shade on her as a silly agnostic, not a real full person

I don't know about that antichrist, but if you routinely take guests' passports for "safe-keeping" you're not a good dude

It's also no coincidence that this is based in Rome, in offices formerly occupied by communists ..and their names lol saint justice and darian synn (sin? Get it?)
Unrelated, but it's interesting to see that Asher can only look up her profile in the news and such. There is no social media yet.

I grew up evangelical, but I've forgotten how scary the late 90s early 2000s were for a set of believers, looking for the antichrist, thinking that that European union was definitely an organization that could be used by him, and the turn of the millennium was the perfect time for all these prophecies to happen. It was surely a sign of the end times

But then again Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher had taught the world that the highway of military preparedness was most often the most direct road to peace.

When I read this previously I felt it was written from a fairly agnostic point of view. And I suppose the lawyer character is. But the writer is definitely Christian and it's touched. She also writes Red Tent-style historical fiction about biblical figures.
The nostalgia of 1999/2000 is great
Google exists but is not widely used yet. Italy uses the lots. A computer exists in a place and is used and then shut down

This book was published in 2000. It mentions chain email (one I've seen maybe back then but definitely recently as a meme) and ISDN- I don't think anyone remembers what that is. Very cool little time capsule

Cute....a failed case for the "Hernandez brothers". A case for "Marvin Maxwell" that was mostly won by "Tommy Coachman" with the line "of the prints don't show you must let him go" 😂
