Jakes ha now introduced two pairs of starcrossed lovers whose fates are at the mercy of the vagaries of war. Their plights have now become pretty much the entirety of the plot.

Several characters are about to be caught up in the Battle of Bull Run or Manassas. You know the war is going to be long when they can't even agree on the name of the battle.
