Status Updates From Harry Potter and the Method...

Stopping for now (at least my goto book) at Chapter 17. Fun, but this is epically long and would rather put more time towards other reads right now.

I might feel otherwise were I a HP fan otherwise, but having seen/read nothing of it beyond this, it doesn't have the same appeal it would for many.

Voldemort's arguments for being Voldemort are so correct. Good guys are never adequately respected or admired or appreciated.

It just lost a star for the unicorn.

I'm gonna pause this and take time figuring out 'the impossible'.

The writer loves to apply his scientific knowledge of myriad studies but as far as actually writing a story with well thought out characters and characterizations, this is lacking. For all the introspection Hp engages in, he needs to sit down and assess what is actually going on and to quit falling into intellectual black holes.

I realize this is not The Canon, however reading this, my respect for some characters has grown - there are some I like less in this version, but... I never cared for Alastor Moody very much, but now... Wow! (At least so far.) As much as I like the origanal books, they just lack some things (not just the Rationality that the title promises)... That said I still have over 600 pages left to reach the final oppinion.

You can tell in this incarnation of HP that he does not belong to Gryffindor; he has no recognition of bravery or self-sacrifice. For all that he prides himself on logic, his logical chain of thought is tenuous at best. He postulates a theoretical situation as true then extends it out to a conclusion never realizing that his initial supposition has not been established as fact. And he does this repeatedly.

Some parts of this the author gets way too carried away with his own supposed erudition and cleverness. The circular logic spirals out of control. Hp is altogether too blinded by his own intellect to actually listen and understand anyone else and somehow he thinks that intellect can completely take the place of life experience. He really is a consummate jackass.

It started off kinda cute and I actually love the dissection of scientific practices and principles but in the last 100 pages it has gone past obnoxious. And it has been 450 pages of his first week of classes. I am fine with the complete recharacterization of the books but really...

I have heard some mention of similarities to Ender Wiggin but in reading so far, he is more the embodiment of Peter Wiggin. He is not a likeable kid, irregardless of his purported intelligence which does not bear close scrutiny. Honestly, there is more than a little authorial arrogance so far. The sorting hat's analysis of HP seems spot-on and I dislike the recharacterization of Hermione so far.

This is a really interesting creative bit of writing. Calling this fan fiction would discredit it as being something less than it is. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is commendable blending of pragmatism and the wizarding world of Harry Potter. It is by appearances, a narrative that is enjoyable and a great way to learn about challenging subjects

Hasta acá llegué, justo después de los capítulos del Stanford Prison Experiment. Hace rato que el libro no aporta nada de las cosas interesantes que tenía al principio, dejó las partes de semi-divulgación para centrarse puramente en la ficción ideada por el autor (pobremente escrita, con personajes y diálogos insoportables).

I love how many things this book manages to combine. Learning about rationality through Harry Potter is great.

Also, why does Harry refer to most of the professors by their frist names?
And what about professor Quirell? I really like the guy, is he gonna turn "evil"? :D :( (Rhetorical question.)
Funny thing is I was just thinking about Lestranges (not) having any children in the series yesterday, and BAM!, here goes Lesath… :D
