The ideas for the characters and the relationships actually came to me while I was trying to go to sleep. I was 24, almost finished with my first year of teaching...and alone. That alone part is fairly important. "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," and hell hath no fury like a woman scorned who knows how to utilize the English language. The first draft was much more autobiographical than the end product happened to be, which is good because I feel there needs to be some separation from my published writing and my public shaming of men. But seriously, after the initial catharsis of writing a novel that contained many of my particular frustrations, I realized that the book deserved more complexity and the character Bennie deserved her own story. So I changed the plot around quite a bit.
I've always been extremely visual concerning my own reading and daydreaming. It happened that it was the same with my writing. Once I had the characters and plot solidified, I would imagine scenes unfolding in my head, then try to transform my imagined visions into descriptive wording. It's a long, arduous process, but it is creatively rewarding and releasing. (less)

Things about me (in bullet point format, because why not?) + a decade of growth and added comments

A decade after self-publishing and now I am publishing with an official publisher. It's fun to see how life has changed, so thought I would reflect on one of my blog posts from ten years ago.

• I have been married for two and a half years and I love my husband. I love that he is supportive, lifts heavy things for me, takes care of the outside of the house, but…

“I should probably apologize for how much I swear, but fuck it. I've read that some people think swearing shows a lack of imagination and a limited vocabulary, but sometimes "darn" and "poop" and "oh heck" just don't cut it. Besides, swearing is kind of fun.”

“Belatedly, she realized something else. “Do you... have anything?”

He didn't seem to have recovered from her last comment. “But do you mean—wait, do I have what?”

She slitted her eyes at him. “Something important.”

“Like what? The phone number for the White House?” A moment later, under her withering glare, realization dawned. “Oh.” His was the expression of someone who has run out of gas in the middle of the desert, miles from help. “I...”
