Like everyone (I'm sure), I have certain memories from early childhood, which began to shape me. Much credit goes to mother, who was a persistently godly woman.

One of my earliest memories was my older brother speaking in tongues. I recall a sense of surprise, and of jealously that he had received the gift of tongues. The family was praying together, and my older brother (who must have been no older than 6 or 7) began speaking in tongues. I asked about it, how it was that he was speaking in tongues - I had heard it done by adults in the church, and my parents, but now it was coming from my brother, who was just three years older than me.

At this I felt amazement that children could be filled with the Holy Spirit as the heroes from the bible had been! Yet, when it had been explained to me that children could also receive the Baptism I personalized the message; I knew that the same gift given to the apostles of scripture was for me too! Upon learning this, I asked at the time if they could also lay hands on me to receive the Baptism, to which my mom replied they could. Yet no further thought seems to have been given to it, as I don’t recall her ever following up by praying for me herself, or having the church leader lay hands on me.

There were other experiences of the supernatural variety, which I recall from those early memories of childhood. This would have been the late 80’s (I was born in January of 1985); I recall prophets - or at least some renowned as such - visiting our church (I know well that I was too young to analyze much of those experiences to verify the validity of each minister). Though I do not have a great number of vivid recollections of interactions with many of them, I had a distinct impression left upon me of ‘true grit’ Pentecostalism. A sense was left in my mind of preachers, and ministers who were as sharp as swords; whose Gospel was full of blood, fire and power!

One of the specific memories I do have was a guest speaker visiting our house. He was speaking of a vision he’d had in which he had literally been in hell. Interestingly enough I did not find this terribly frightening. Some of the messages of certain preachers were frightening, but none was ever quite as fearful to me as was the bible itself.

I recall at a very young age my mother reading to me the story of Cain and Abel. Ironically, however, it is not the concept of Cain murdering his brother that stood out to me as frightening; it was the part after that, where God was speaking to Cain about his sin. My mom read to me that God said to Cain: "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground.” (Gen 4:10)

I was filled with intense terror at this passage. I asked my mom: ‘God can hear blood?!’ This was fear of God coming upon me. He not only knew what I did, and what I thought, but he could hear infinitely more than we yet knew or could speak. The thought of blood crying to God, in itself is horrific. It was apparent to me then, that there were whole other worlds which are affected by this one; worlds which man cannot see, hear or conceive of on his own, and that God is attentive enough to hear even one’s blood.

I also have the recollection at such a young age of meditating on eternity. I became filled with fear at the concept of living forever. Yet some of these things, which truly would be frightening to any reasonable adult who believed such, also seems to have paved my way to the thought that God is good.
