Despite my praise for the Hunger Games I am still a skeptic of the genre, YA and its affinity for obvious plot points and heavy handed angsty characteristizations do not appeal to me often as a lover of subtle lyrical prose and internally driven narratives. The best kinds of story's to me are the kind that happen in the character's head, prioritizing memory and identity over a larger overbearing plot that the protagonist must surmount. Though as a teenager I bulldozed all the Percy Jackson books (and their spin offs) as well as Twilight or Maze Runner, I can no longer truly buckle down for a YA blockbuster. So why have I given this five stars? This book where the loner MC is a compilation of "I'm so emo uwu " teen angst tropes? Well because of those are blockbusters this is a tasteful indie Sean Baker film with Cannes acclaim and a Jennifer Lawrence type at its center. It's definitively a product of its genre (expect gratuitous descriptions of eyes - particularly how they compare to night skies ) but Courtney Summers manages to take a note out of Suzanne Collins book. Treating writing for children with the seriousness it deserves and trusting her readers to be able to digest complicated themes and glean implicit subtleties. There's a respect for the reader in "Sadie" that goes a long way in lending the story the attention it deserves.

As a premise "Sadie " is right up there with the best of the best of mystery thrillers. Inverting the missing girl trope by solving her death in the first chapter as the story unveils itself as a girl gone missing tragedy. The choice to switch point of views with each chapter and to make one of the chapters a podcast transcript was brilliant!!!!! The cherry on the top of an already emotionally resonate story as the podcast set in the present engages with the choices made by Sadie in the past colliding in the end as a devastating tragedy no one walks away from. I listened to the podcast whilst reading the ebook and I cannot overstate how phenomenal the podcast is! The sound effects, the voice actors, all of it coalescing exceptionally to create this run down hopeless worlds where girls go missing and no one cares.

The realism of "Sadie" is what ultimately brought me to tears. All the violence felt real, the reckless choices human and consequences unfairly true. Tragedy does strike , we all know that,but what they never talk about is that it sometimes doesn't stop- coming down relentlessly like a whip on a poor servants back. That sometimes tragedy strikes and never leaves, can stay there stagnant and all consuming. Summers captures that disorienting fact and it cuts to the bone. Had to pause the audiobook, stop washing the dishes and cry as I read the last page. What else do I have to say but read this ? ...more "
