ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Devorah Heitner is the author of Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World and her book on navigating privacy and reputation with kids and teens, Growing Up in Public will be out Septmber with Penguin Random House.

Dr. Heitner’s work has appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN Opinion. She has a Ph.D. in Media/Technology & Society from Northwestern University and has taught at DePaul and Northwestern. You don’t actually want a friend that says yes to everything.

Tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are becoming part more and more ubiquitous. Kids are not just using these apps to help with homework. They’re asking it for advice, entertainment, and even emotional support.

According to the Common Sense Media, one in three kids have have talked with AI about their emotions or personal challenges.
