Friends since childhood, Calvin and Ethan have been virtually inseparable from day one. Ethan's selective mutism (SM) and social anxiety mean that despite his seven foot tiger Therian frame, he's fairly defenseless. Calvin, a five-foot-seven Human, is willing, able, and eager to stand in the path of anyone who might harm his best friend, who also happens to be the man he’s in love with. Ethan feels the same way, but his disabilities mean that changing the dynamic from friend to lover must be taken incredibly slowly so as to not cause him undue stress and shut him down completely.

I really enjoyed gaining a new perspective on the team as a whole as well as individual relationships through new eyes. As with Against the Grain, the world according to Calvin and Ethan really demonstrates the dynamics of the team and further rounds out the already excellently-detailed characters. It is in this novel that we also begin to see more of Lieutenant Sparks, making her less peripheral and more hands-on as well as receiving the merest glimpses into her personality and personal life.

As with all THIRDS novels, this book is driven by a singular negative situation, but it is through this that we finally get to see Ethan’s bomb technician skill set in action, in addition to the well-known terrorizing aspects of his Therian form. We learn more about Ethan's family, as well, and the situations he has dealt with since childhood that have had tremendous impact on his SM and SA. We are also presented with how Calvin processes the mental anguish that comes with his duties as a sniper. Interspersed with these are snippets of scenes from the pair's younger years, as well as some shockingly erotic surprises (or maybe it was just me, but wow – go Ethan!) once they finally do take the leap to lovers.

Never one to leave anything half done, Ms. Cochet has once again shown the depth and breadth of her amazing talent. While the book does have the requisite HEA for the two main characters of this novel, it also ends on a cliffhanger for the overarching series, complete with a staggering declaration from the team’s lieutenant a mere seven lines from the end. A solid five stars of amazing writing skill!

This is not, however, any sort of a negative. Indeed, it seems necessary to set Ash and Cael apart in such a way that there is no mistaking this as any sort of pale shadow of storyline as compared to that of Dex and Sloane.

In taking several trips through Ash's psyche, it becomes heartbreakingly clear why he has been unable to move forward up to now with his readily apparent feelings for the younger, much more innocent Cael. The hurt inflicted by those whose sole duty was to love him has defined every aspect of his life to this point. Ash's abrasive personality is explained, allowing the more tender person within to emerge and embrace love while leaving his Alpha status intact.

Cael's background also brings with it some startlingly unexpected aspects, including his ability to survive and move beyond domestic violence to love and trust again. He is not just an adorable computer nerd that has had a relatively unscathed life, which is how I'd thought of him up to now, and now knowing what has made him the person he is, I'm looking forward to rereading the other novels with this entirely new perspective on the resilient cheetah Therian.

The addition of a totally new storyline further threw things off kilter. With new insights into Delta Destructive's Austen, and Lieutenant Sparks, this opens a multitude of possibilities for storylines. It is also an excellent addition to the story arc and I can understand the thought process of Ms. Cochet. This will not only allow for additional buildup in the series; it will also allow for a complete shift in direction if that is where the characters wish to go.

Ms. Cochet's organic writing allows the thoughts and feelings of her complex cast of characters to simply flow through her and out into print form. If you haven't tried the THIRDS series yet, you need to. You're missing out!! ...more "
