A decent, readable adventure story that should have been far more ruthlessly edited to improve pacing. Still, I enjoyed the premise enough to push through a bit of repetition and unnecessary detail!

"“Once, the padishah of Hindustan had been the richest man in the world. But by 1837, he was just an old man whose wretched circumstances elicited the pity of a passing traveller”"

“People who claim that they're evil are usually no worse than the rest of us... It's people who claim that they're good, or any way better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of.”
Gregory Maguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

Joe Abercrombie
“Once you've got a task to do, it's better to do it than live with the fear of it.”
Joe Abercrombie, The Blade Itself

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”
J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing into the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking:
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall! ”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King

Joe Abercrombie
“If you want to be a new man you have to stay in new places, and do new things, with people who never knew you before. If you go back to the same old ways, what else can you be but the same old person?”
Joe Abercrombie, Last Argument of Kings
