Winter’s Bone was a chilling read, which throws you on a wave on uncertainty. The book’s unsettling setting makes the book unpredictable, however the book may be hard to read at times. Many can relate to the main character, Ree Dolly, especially if you have struggled trying to keep family together. Ree is constantly being challenged in this book, being so young, practically raising herself. I may have misread this book, due to the hard context, which may be difficult for others.

Plot Summary:
Ree Dolly, is a 16 year old girl, born and raised in the rural mountains whilst battling poverty. With a mentally absent mother, and two young dependent brothers, Ree is constantly put at obstacle. Connie Dolly, mother of Ree struggles to function mentally, and is blockaded from her children due to this barrier of communication. As said, Ree works to the bone trying to provide for her siblings. Sonny Dolly, may be ten in age, but he carries himself highly. Throughout the story Sonny desperately itches to prove his sense of maturity, while younger brother Harold tries constantly to replicate his siblings. Winter’s Bone is a story, where knowing the family is vital. Throughout the storyline, Ree constantly struggles with family, and her own well being.
Jessup Dolly, Ree’s father who was at the time convicted for running a self made meth lab. One day skips bail on charges, and the Dolly’s will result in loss of their home if Jessup is absent for his court date. With so many people dependent on Ree, she’s determined to bring her father back in time. She proceeds to go on a man hunt, discovering new depths of herself, and of her family history. This is set in the ozarks, a rural mountain area hence why Ree is portrayed as such a strong girl for her age.

Recommendation
I can honestly say this book was not what I expected, it did get fairly intense at some points. Some parts you really start to feel for Ree, a sense of compassion for her. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a dark fiction, with many morbid twists and turns. The eerie settings in this book may chill the reader, but Woodrell is gifted with the talent of shadowing a situation. ...more "
