I worked in the ER for three years or so, as a tech (which is to say, helper/ orderly/ nursing assistant/ extra pair of hands). Now that my training requires me to buy this guy, it's like I am a "grownup" at last, in Emergency Med terms.

First impressions? For a small book, this sucker is thick. A 100-pager at this size would fit into a lab coat pocket, but this is the book that always hangs out in a cabinet at the nurses' station... somebody explain to me why it can't be regular text-book size.
The content seems very solid; like so many high-level medical texts, chapters are contributed individually, by experts in various sub-fields. This is essentially the "Baby Tintinalli."...more

This one is on what seems to be an absurdly long-term loan... In the back of my mind, the fact that I've borrowed it from an actual librarian inspires the same kind of shame I'd feel if it came from a city library.

This is a kind of follow-up to the book that inspired the film "Wag the Dog," which was darkly funny, seemed absurd at the time, and then grew progressively more frightening and depressing. I'm having a similar experience working my way through this newer story; I can't do more than a chapter or two at a time before I'm sent into a spiral of quiet rage and disappointment.
This is actually a high compliment. The plotting seems to meander a little, but Beinhart has a large cast, ranging from a handful of psycho ex-Military political "fixers" in the employ of the Neo-con incumbent to the mostly-sane, mostly-heroic title character. He ably communicates several different political and philosophical points of view -- 3/4 of the way through the book, it seems to me that respect and empathy for one's opponents is the secret to winning these kinds of cat-and-mouse games.
But as I say, my reading has been interrupted several times, and not always by responsibilities outside of the book. Sorry, guys. I know you had someone you were going to lend it to next. How about if I promise to have it back 90 days prior to Election Day?...more

"Porth" is one of the mainstays of my medical education. It's a step or two above the typical college A&P text, but surprisingly well-done. The concepts are sometimes difficult, but the language is clear."Porth" is one of the mainstays of my medical education.
