Prasanna builds his players painstakingly with sartorial choices, behavioural nuances, physical detailing and cuisine preferences that place his character sketches inches away from his reader. This and Prasanna’s deep research and understanding of the spy-verse, replete with Gunjan’s Q-like presence and the gadgets and ammo she arms the Bond-like Keshav Bose, engages the reader as they warm up to an Ian Fleming-esque reading experience. To this Prasanna adds sardonic wit through cleverly written dialogues and beautifully crafted prose that make the reader smile as they race through the novel, neck to neck with the twin spies- India’s Bose and France’s Camilla Faidu who seek to explore and dismantle the machinations of the antagonists- a debauched Xu and the sinister Fidan.
The novel rarely pauses; it moves from ambush to pursuit, from fortress to monastery, from coded messages to brutal confrontations. The Himalayan landscape is transformed into a terrain of peril, where altitude and isolation become accomplices to violence. Prasanna’s espionage thriller traverses geopolitics, spiritual authority weaponizing faith and following, heart stopping encounters and death raining drones all etched into the mountain snow. On the obverse, I would have liked a little more detailing into the sinister Xu-Fidan operations building up to the concerted drone onslaught that could throw India and China at each other’s throats. That said, Prasanna has acquitted himself remarkably well with his debut effort and this novel is a must read for lovers of adrenaline pumping espionage encounters. There is a veiled, unmistakable sense in the closing stretch, that ‘The Deadly Descent’ is laying the foundation stone for something larger than a one-off mission. When the man from VIPERA finally steps out of the shadows, and General Zhu emerges not just as a distant antagonist but as the custodian of his son Xu’s unfinished malice, the book promises that there is more in the works from Prasanna’s pen. I for one will be salivating for a sequel, especially if it is helmed by the twin spies- Keshav and Camilla who so endeared themselves to me in this outing… ...more

Som approaches this world with the seriousness of a chronicler and the sensibility of a storyteller, allowing history to breathe without losing sight of the human pulse beneath it. What will amaze the reader is that the characters and context that Som has chosen are not famous faces, but people and places hidden from our history books and therefore perhaps opaque to many of us. And for any writer using secondary research of a dated era, the climb for Som must have been even more arduous. One wonders how he managed to find the pearls and string them along, notwithstanding that he had the latitude of imagination and creativity in weaving the thread.
Isa Khan dominates the narrative, not merely as a warrior chieftain but as a man shaped by contradictions—of mixed blood of both a Hindu (and converted, facing much opprobrium) and a Muslim; once a slave, now a leader; hardened by loss, yet still vulnerable to love. His vow never again to bow to an overlord collides with his longing for Sona, the widowed daughter of a Kulin Kayastha, whose presence reawakens a tenderness he believed buried with Princess Pari of Qazvin, a dalliance outside his marriage. Their relationship becomes the novel’s emotional counterweight, a reminder that rebellion is not only waged on battlefields but also within the private precincts of the heart.
Som’s Bengal is rendered with care. The forts rising from the mist, the bazaars humming with trade, the shifting waterways that both protect and imperil—these are not decorative flourishes but living elements of the story. The riverine landscape shapes strategy, survival, and identity; it becomes the novel’s spine, carrying the weight of battles, escapes, negotiations, and betrayals. The military episodes, especially the Mughal retreats and naval manoeuvres, are vivid and kinetic, echoing the cadence of oral epics.
The novel’s greatest strength lies in its historical detailing. Som’s research into the Baro Bhuiyans, the political geography of the time, and the mechanics of river warfare lends the narrative authenticity and texture. Isa’s leadership—his refusal to pay Mughal taxes, his risky alliances, his constant balancing of autonomy against the safety of his people—anchors the book’s thematic concerns: resistance against empire, the ethics of power, and the cost of rebellion.
Yet these strengths also create limitations. The density of historical exposition, while rewarding for readers who relish immersion, may feel heavy for those unfamiliar with the period. Isa’s portrayal, though layered, leans toward the heroic; his moral certainties rarely fracture, giving the novel a classical, almost legendary tone rather than the psychological ambiguity of more contemporary historical fiction. Sona, central to the emotional narrative, sometimes risks being overshadowed by Isa’s larger than life presence, and several secondary characters function more as structural supports than as fully realized individuals.
Som’s prose is clear, descriptive, and cinematic, favouring the quiet and rich savouring over momentum. Once the stakes settle, the pacing picks up, though the early chapters demand patience as the world is meticulously assembled.
The Raja of Jongol Badi will appeal to readers who enjoy historically grounded tales of valour, regional resistance, and forgotten histories brought to life. Each is built around unusual circumstances—bloodstains haunting a family over a sapphire gem, a housewarming game turning deadly, an old man's sudden blindness linked to buried coins and a whistle, deadly arrows and copycat killings echoing a 15-year-old unsolved case. Amritendu leans on the familiar trope of a cerebral detective (think Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi from Bengal literature or Sherlock Holmes) and his protagonist Victor Chatterjee- “Vic”, a college student of Chemistry skilled in Forensics and Martial Arts comes across as credible. Vic’s sidekick is his cousin Rik, an endearing eager beaver who accompanies him on most outings.
The writing moves with the assurance of one who understands the old pleasures of a whodunit and knows exactly how to rehouse them in an Indian landscape in a vivid Kolkata backdrop without losing their crispness. The novel’s architecture is its greatest triumph: clues are planted with care, the misdirection is never frivolous, and the narrative holds its tension with the steady grip of someone who respects both craft and reader. The trail unfolds with a sense of inevitability rather than convenience, and the author resists the temptation of the cheap, last-minute twist. Some may argue however that it is more “tell” than “show”, yet Amritendu provides fair-play clues that allows the more attentive reader the quiet satisfaction of spotting a clue just when the story allows it.
Some may lament that the novel could have done more in the emotional shading of its characters. Perhaps the episodic construct of the book is responsible, disallowing deeper psychological complexity, long arcs and emotional depth. Deadly Clues delivers clean, engaging, adventure driven mysteries, propelled by clever plotting and an unfussy narrative rhythm. It may not seek to reinvent the genre, but it offers a thoroughly satisfying sleuth-sibling duo led read for anyone who values the elegance of a well-constructed puzzle over the darker, more psychological corners of crime fiction.
