I’ve got one of those disjointed, rambling career paths that always look rather fun on a book’s flyleaf (but never make any money); lawyer, artist, teacher, house-cleaner, chocolatier, baker, property developer, pantomime producer. I also suffer from moving-house syndrome. I once calculated that I’d moved house more than forty times, in the UK and abroad including Greece, Belgium and the USA.

It finally struck me one day that maybe I’d be better off staying put in one place and writing about all these different lives instead of trying to experience them myself. And my writing career was born!

Vivienne Shannon Just write the first draft and don't think about anything else until you have typed those magic words 'The End' (grammar, spelling, plot, character ar…moreJust write the first draft and don't think about anything else until you have typed those magic words 'The End' (grammar, spelling, plot, character arc, agents, publishers, what you are going to spend your massive advance on, who will play you in the film of your life... ) just get the first draft written and then you can start playing around with it and knocking it into shape. Completing that first draft will be a massive confidence boost and amazing sense of achievement that will sustain you through all the complex technical stuff you'll have to start thinking about.

If you can afford it, join a really focused writing course with like-minded critical writers. I did the Faber Academy writing course which changed my life. (I run my own writing course based on that, so I have a bit of vested interest in saying that!)(less)

Vivienne Shannon I don't really suffer from it, but I think that's because I spend a huge amount of time staring into space thinking about what I'm writing, so by the …moreI don't really suffer from it, but I think that's because I spend a huge amount of time staring into space thinking about what I'm writing, so by the time I come to write something down I've got it all sorted out in my head. If I do get stuck with something - a scene or a character I can't get right - I just leave it and write something else and eventually - with enough additional staring into space - the answer will come to me. Motorway driving is also a great way to let that creative and imaginative part of your brain go meandering off, and that often finds me an answer to a problem.(less)
