Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith was a very thought provoking and fun to read book all around. There are two storylines throughout the book which are completely different from each other, which gave the book two side and created two stories making Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith was a very thought provoking and fun to read book all around. There are two storylines throughout the book which are completely different from each other, which gave the book two side and created two stories making the book in my opinion more interesting to read. There are three main characters(Austin, Robby, and Shann) but the story is told through entries of Austins journal. These entries bring out a very real side of being a strict catholic school boy, there are many instances throughout the book where Austin is confused about his sexualty even though Shann is his serious girlfriend. I believe that this shows what it could be like growing up where being gay isn't talked about and how confusing it might be to someone who doesn't understand and isn't being educated on the subject. The other story line is completely different, it starts because of Robby and Austins stuff getting thrown on the roof by kids from another school. So they come back at night, the stuff is on top of a low end collectors shop that Austin works at. The two boys get there stuff but diced to go into Austins bosses office and find a biosphere. As they are exploring the office the other boys from the other school break into the office to steal alcohol and while there doing this the biosphere breaks. This creates a plague called MI PLAGUE STRAIN 412E where in which you get infected killed and grasshoppers come out of our body. Even this aspect of the book addresses how corporation funded science can turn out to be horrible. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun story but with undertones of important topics that still are happening today....more
