Harry Potter is only a baby when both his parents, Lilly and James Potter, get murdered by the dark Lord Voldemort or He-who-must-not-be-named. After the murder of Harrys parents, Voldemort tries to kill Harry too but without success which lead him weakened and close to defeated. Ten years later, Harry had grown into a small pale boy with black hair that grew faster than any other kid he went to school with. He was also forced to live together with the only close relatives he had which was his aunt Petunia Dursley and her husband, Vernon Dursley. Petunia was always jealous of her witch sister Lilly since she was the centre of attention in their family, this made Petunia dislike Harry from the start. On Harry’s upcoming 11th birthday, he receives a letter from Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since he himself is a wizard just like his both parents were. The letter was received from Rubeus Hagrid, who works and lives on Hogwarts and who also was the one picking up infant Harry after the murder of Lilly and James. Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Ally where they shop for magical school supplies such as books, an owl (either owl, cat or toad) and a wand since it’s required for every witch/wizard to have. Some time goes by and Harry is finally ready to take the Hogwarts Express (train) which leaves King’s Cross Station on platform 9 ¾. After getting confused finding the right platform, Harry runs into another wizard family, the Weasley’s. The Weasley family can be described as gingers since they all have a red hair colour. Molly Weasley, the mother, explains how it’s her youngest son Ron’s first time to Hogwarts as well. During their time on the train they both meet a brilliant young witch with brown bushy hair, named Hermione Granger. As they all arrive to Hogwarts, characters like Draco Malfoy, a white-haired pale boy and Neville Longbottom, chubby and clumsy, are introduced. Once all the newly arrived students get introduced to Hogwarts by the headmaster Albus Dumbledore, the sorting begins. All students will be assigned to one of the four existing houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin) of Hogwarts by an old talking wizard hat. Ron, Hermione and Harry all three get put into Gryffindor together. As the schoolyear starts the young witches and wizards learn how to fly a broom, use spells and other magical things. They also get to meet all the teachers and there’s one teacher that is acting suspiciously. Severus Snape or Professor Snape, teaching potions but rather be the dark arts teacher. Harry’s dark arts teacher was called professor Quirrell, a stuttering and very nervous wizard. Suspicious event is happening at the school, during Halloween a troll was let loose and almost kill Hermione that was crying in the girl’s bathroom. Fortunately, Harry and Ron manage to knock the troll out and save Hermione. As the weird events proceed to continue, Professor Snape became more and more suspicious to the three so they decided to investigate a little further. They found “Fluffy”, they three-headed dog, guarding the entrance leading to the Philosopher’s stone. Harry, Ron and Hermione sneaks by Fluffy when he was asleep and find their next three challenges which all of them was suited for their own strengths. Hermione and her cleverness, Harry in his skill of broom-flying and Ron in his skill of wizard-chess. This all lead Harry, because Ron got hurt and Hermione stayed with him, to the chamber where the Philosopher’s stone was kept. To his surprise, it was not professor Snape who wanted to steal the stone but no other than professor Quirrell, Harry’s dark arts teacher. He had been helping lord Voldemort getting his strength back and making him a powerful wizard again. Harry killed the professor and Voldemort escaped barely alive once again. After everything Harry recovered and the schoolyear was over which means they had to go back home. As for Harry, it meant he had to spend more time with the Dursley’s.
What I liked about the book.
The story felt very creative and original in some aspects such as the moving stair inside of the school or the moving paintings hanging on the wall. I’d say my favourite character was Hermione because even though she was muggleborn she still was the smartest in her class, always knowing everything. It felt like she always wanted to learn more so despite her background she was an excellent witch!
I liked how happy the book was for Harry since he had struggled so hard with the Dursley’s and I felt happy for him that he got good friends at Hogwarts.
As they say, the book is better than the movie but that doesn’t necessarily make the movie bad! I enjoyed both just as much.
What I disliked about the book.
No depth in explaining what happened to Lilly and James Potter except the fact that they were murdered by lord Voldemort. The plot itself moves quickly as the story proceeds, I would prefer it being a little slower to really get those details in. After all, it’s a children’s book, it’s better suited for them!
Recommending.
I highly recommend it to children/teenagers aged 10-18 years since it really is a fun read.
Comparison
The story is very well through thought although some things were “inspired” by other books such as Lord of The Rings. Example of that: A dark lord that was “defeated” (Voldemort and Sauron) or a grey-haired wizard (Dumbledore and Gandalf). ...more "
