John is a well qualified and experienced British inventor, engineer and aerodynamicist, and he just wanted to write about various things that had, or might have, happened to him.

He writes to stave off the incipient insanity of trying to bring his various inventions to fruition. He says that all writers are of course, by nature, idea thieves, and, if it works, sorcerers.

He began by designing cars, but soon became fascinated by wingsails. One of the wingsail boats he has designed has circumnavigated the Globe, he has sailed another safely through a major Atlantic hurricane off Bermuda, 'Claudette', and one of his designs was given a Millennium Award by the British government.
