(Revealing names gets tricky, almost spoiler territory.) I find myself rooting for them. I want them to be happy together, and as I watch them go silent in various ways, I wish they would communicate. I occasionally think of real-life couples I'm friends with, wondering if their partnerships are as strong as they seem to an outsider looking in--of course, I'll never know. Ways of Going Home is the kind of book that allows more than a glimpse into that private world. (less)

Since Repairable Men is a collection of ten stories, it's hard to give one straight answer. Can I tell you how I got the title instead? The working title was Good Guys Like Us, but late in the editing process, before submitting the manuscript, I cut the title story from the collection, leaving me with no title at all. One night, I stayed up late and read the manuscript "cover-to-cover," and drank beer, and made a list of possible titles taken from the dialogue and narration. I put down anything with a ring to it. The next morning, I was horrified to learn what I thought had a ring to it when drunk and tired, but I whittled it down to three possible choices. I didn't make the final decision until it was time to start submitting, several weeks later. (less)
