Stewart's lush descriptions drew me to Greece, but I've yet to visit. So, that would be my first choice--if I were going back to the same time and places.

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series sent me to Scotland three times, and it is my favorite destination. I have no desire to go back to the 1700s, but I would love to see Inverness and the rest of the Highlands during and shortly after WWII, especially since I write novels set in that period in America.
I'd hoped to return this summer, but Covid took care of that, and who knows when we'll feel free to travel again or when the rest of the world will once again welcome American travelers? But I have my memories, my journals, and my photos to keep me company.

And one of these days, I'll have a novel set in one of Scotland's castle hotels. Here's just a snippet of description:

Fiona died in 1485, or thereabouts. Or did she? If so, why is she still hanging around the castle where she leapt from a window to escape marriage to a decrepit old miser? Well, because now the hotel has become a wedding venue, and Fiona can't put her soul to bed for good until she has stopped at least one mismatched couple from tying the knot over the blacksmith's ancient anvil in the back garden. I really enjoyed this book. I should say at the start that I'd had it in my queue for a long time, and so didn't remember anything about it when I started listening after cataract surgery. Thus, I was unaware until I finished that it was a fictionali ...more
