In terms of what that means for this book, hacker refers not to those shady cybercriminals that silently lurk on the Internet trying to squeeze their way into any computer they can (much like the one you, are now probably reading this on). The original meaning for the word hacker in respects to the world of computing refers to those individuals who enjoy tinkering with and improving software and computer systems in general. Programmers and debuggers, in other words, the people who keep the whole system running with the efficiency is needed in this modern fast-paced world. The book is divided into a series of letters that in one way of another were formerly circulating around the hacker culture and its associated periodicals (as well as at least copy no doubt being stored on someone's computer somewhere)

It begins with an introduction that gives a creative and revealing look into the development of computers and the culture of those who love them from the beginning of the sixties and up until the rise of the Internet. It then goes on to describe various aspects of comparing two different methods of software development. First is the traditional method software development, this would be with one or a few developers, the author refers to this as the Cathedral method. This is contrasted with the Bazaar method which involves a central coordinator (or possibly coordinators) centered around a community of users and debuggers all whom work for the joy of tinkering with and fixing the bugs in the system. These are shown through the examples of his own experiences as well as those of people he knows and/or has collected letters by.

Though somewhat a memoir this book is most definitely primarily for the tech-savvy individual and not the sort of thing that everyone would enjoy reading (unless they like learning about the inner workings of things like Linux and email protocols). Still a finely crafted piece of literature which, I enjoy greatly. ...more "
