This is great! Reads a lot like Bolaño or something with a Fitzcarraldo Edition (including, somewhat recently, this book).

While at times it may feel a little uneven, when taken at the full time-scale (or page-scale?) of Sozhenitsyn's arc, this is a highly engrossing way of tackling individual moments in history. I've got no real reason to be interested in Stolypin, but ...more
