I like to think I’ve lived an epic life on a small scale. I currently live in Chicago, a city I love so much I’ve featured it in my first book. I’ve lived and worked around the world and returned to Chicago because of the lake and beaches, the museums and theater, the festivals and symphony, and of course for the hot dogs. My characters don’t always explore the world in the same way I do, but my goal is to give my readers a sense of what the city’s neighborhoods really feel like.

Writing is as pleasurable as reading is to me. The characters and places form in my mind the same way. If can’t see the character or place, I know my reader won’t either. Sometimes my settings are fictional, other times very real. Take Chicago’s Rogers Park neighbo ...more
