Andrew R. Thompson was raised in Morrisville, a small town in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Although he's moved several times in and out of Morrisville (albeit not far) family, friends, and Morrisville's own uncanny ability to impart a sense of belonging, draws him back to the town on an almost daily basis. ...more

I am sorry to hear about your brother's struggle- it is hard to leave behind friends and a place you feel connected to. I myself only reconnected with a lot of the boys I talked about in this book when we published it. It was good to reconnect with some of them, though others had since passed away, which was very sad to hear. As for whether or not my book could help your brother, I think I may have to leave that up to your own discretion. Once Upon My Time was written with the purpose of telling my own family my stories, specifically of growing up in Morrisville in the 30's and 40's. It does have an underlying message of growth, hope, and friendship, however, the times and issues Morrisville faced in the 30's and 40's included a world depression, a world war, the fear of polio, and very pronounced discrimination. Those are the things that my Morrisville wrestled with. I don't know your brother, but you do, if you think reading my story may help him, I'm glad of it; if you think it may only bring back painful memories, I think you would be the best judge of that. I hope this helps you, and thank you for noticing this personal history of mine.(less)

Once these notes began to compile, some of my grand- and great-grandchildren encouraged me to put it together in story form. To complete the project, however, required the technical wherewithal of my son-in-law, Jim, and granddaughter, Anna. And then there was a book.(less)

A Dandelion Bouquet (For my Daughter Frances)

There are many flower bouquets of such beautiful designs,
But, they can’t compare to a child’s hand-crushed bouquet of dandelions.

You see, there’s a magic when a child picks flowers in an open field,
Each flower is picked with love; a love that’s forever sealed.

Oh, you can try to direct her to pick only the flowers nearby,
Yet, she’ll run to a far away flower, and we’ll never know why.

More of Andrew's books…
Rudyard Kipling
“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!”
