1776 Book Review

In David McCullough’s 1776 the book opens in London, England October 26, 1775. The novel starts here and covers the months to follow covering the intricate plot of the nearly mythical year of 1776. McCullough covers everything from the specifics of the Battle of Bunker Hill too how King George III related to his not so loyal American subjects to his very loyal subjects in the mother country. McCullough does an excellent job of recounting the soldiers stories from the ticking time bomb leading up to the Boston Massacre all the way to the very bitter end of the war.
In the Revolutionary War George Washington is the usual favorite pick. On the contrary my favorite character is not George Washington. My favorite character from the moment I started reading about him was Nathanael Greene. He was a General, but never had fought in battle. He charged into battle, but had a limp. He educated himself because he never received any formal education. Greene was the tangible living version of the maxim of rolling with the punches life throws at you. Every time McCullough wrote about a battle his excellent ability to describe every detail in perfect and clear accuracy comes out. This style is appropriate because these stories of soldiers are true and really did happen, and it helps someone feel immersed in the battle. The story is very interesting because it seems like it has to be fiction it is so baffling.
The story is very well written, but is a little too dense for my liking. The detail is necessary to tell the stories as well as they are told, but due to the intelligence behind the writing it becomes very difficult to read at points. I stress that McCullough does an excellent job describing anything and everything in the span of a very short period of time. The book just is written with such an intelligent voice it can bog someone down in parts.
I gave the book a four-star rating because of how captivating the novel is even though the plot of the story is common knowledge. I enjoyed the book very much and would recommend it to someone that is interested in history. ...more "
