I'm a children's book writer and editor living in New York. I'm originally from Georgia but went to school in Chicago, and while I studied "the great books" in class, I spent every moment of free time in the children's and young adult section of 57th Street Books, devouring stories by Francesca Lia Block, David Levithan, Diana Wynne Jones, Ursula K Le Guin, and many more. But really, my fate was sealed the moment my wonderful local bookseller handed me Redwall as a kid. (Thankfully, the fan fiction by eleven-year-old me is no longer online.) ...more

Hi Andrea,
Thanks so much for your note and for the kind words. I'd say I channeled my love of villain origin stories like Gregory Maguire's Wicked while writing The Spider Ring; I wanted to write a story about a girl who, like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty, received the favor of animals, only instead of squirrels and bluebirds, it was spiders. The Spider Ring is a standalone for now, but I have a YA novel called The Fascinators (written as Andrew Eliopulos) coming out next May.
All best,

I Was That Boy

This week, author Shannon Hale shared the heartbreaking story of a recent school visit which the middle school boys were not allowed to attend because Shannon's books were judged by the administrators to be "for girls." Younger boys did get to hear her presentation, and one boy lingered after her signing, clearly shy and even embarrassed, to ask if she had a copy of her wonderful The Princess in B

Katharine Gardner Try The Froggitt Chain by Katharine Ann Angel... cracking read. Mystery. Set in NW England. A retired milkman throws away a bag containing stuff from his past, including a gold chain he took off a dead guy as a child. But illogical Hugo Quin finds the bag and decides to return it to its owner using the 'clues' inside. Very funny in some places. Great ending.
