I'm a lifelong journalist who most recently covered real estate for The Wall Street Journal, and I still write an occasional freelance piece for the paper. Previously I was the deputy business editor at Newsday on Long Island, N.Y., and the features editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

I grew up in a small farm town in Kansas working for my parents, who owned competing hardware stores next door to each other on Main Street. At 18, I left home to earn a journalism degree at the University of Kansas but continued to hold hardware close to my heart.
