It is passionless writing, typing down anything that comes to mind. It almost always occurs when I know where the story goes, but can't think of an interesting way to get to the destination. So I type, the story moves ahead and I trust that I'll be able to come back and make it more interesting. The more I write, though, the more I realize two things. One, sometimes all that is needed is to move the plot from A to B. Two, having more than one of these blockage moments in a story can indicate I've picked the wrong thing to write about. First, the freedom to create entire worlds populated by characters who seem so real to me that writing about them feels like writing about real people.
Second, that tremendous, shaky-finger five second moment when 12-18 months of hard, hard work is done. All the outlining, brainstorming, first draft, fight to find time from real work, soccer coaching, filling the car with the blue-white glow of typing in a dark school parking lot next to the soccer fields where oldest is training, second draft, third draft, send to the editor then another five drafts, arrange with the cover art people, format for eReader work is done. Pressing the Publish button is a significant feeling.(less)

Has it really been a year?

My oh my how time moves across these mortal bones. Eras and epochs. Sand blown by sea wind covers footprints washed away by waves born off the coast of Argentina.
Christmas was yesterday. Wonderful but sonless, a "compromise" reached months ago. Okay. Why the long absence? The decommitment to writing was profound, impacting everything except necessary work emails. Oh, and journal entries.
