J.E. Erickson fell in love with horror and fantasy at an early age. The first story he wrote was at age 11 and was about a child walking home from school to discover his own gravestone. He still thinks about it when referring to himself in third person.

He currently writes horror and fantasy stories, and lives in an old house in the Midwestern United States with a nerdy soap maker, two spoiled dogs, and a (potentially) possessed vegetable garden.

His debut novel "Offerings to the Flower Moon: The Tale of the Abrams Witch" released in 2022. You should totally read it.

I think most writer's block comes from places of self-doubt, lack of preparation, and not feeling like you're asking the right questions of your characters. At least for me it's these things.

What I do is just freewrite. I have a document that exists solely for me to smear word vomit upon. I kill characters, give them their deepest desires, change them in some fundamental way -- anything I can do to discover who they are in a little more depth. It's all stream of consciousness, no subject too taboo, not worried about editing content. It's helped put me in a workable headspace, as well as generate ideas and characters for other stories. If you don't find what you consider your acceptable level of failure on your project (labor of love or otherwise) you can find yourself spinning your wheels on it forever.

Finish what you write. Write something else. (less)

J.E.’s Recent Updates

The Art of Survival by Lilith Quinn
"This book is heartbreaking. And it shows you the lasting trauma of a child who has been sexually abused. Beverly is now in her early 20s, and she copes by painting, drinking, and doing whatever drugs she can get a hold of. She also has an eating diso" Read more of this review »

The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
"Great fun, even though I saw the ending coming about 1/3 through the book - but the pattern recognition powers are very strong in this one (and I've read several metric tons of books by now) -, and the FMC was one of the most dense or naive people I " Read more of this review »

I honestly wish this was taught alongside all the self-aggrandizing American history bullshit I was taught in school. It is such a microcosm of how people in society act today. Out of touch administrators, the inhumanity of small-minded and arrogant ...more

J.E. Erickson and 1 other person liked Rebecca White's review of Spooky Lovers:
Spooky Lovers by J.V. Gachs
"This was such a fun read!

Ghosts, cemeteries, revenge…the perfect mix.

This novella was feisty, emotional, clever and comical. Our FMCs were well fleshed (pun intended), their chemistry was cute, and the story line was fast paced.

Thank you to the autho" Read more of this review »

I enjoyed this very much. The voice is front and center, the prose is beautiful at times, and the story is engaging. It has a creepy ghost, romance, and mystery. Being a sucker for what some call the "lost era" between WW1 and WW2, I went into this w ...more

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow
"Without the ending, that truly made up for almost 275 pages of being nearly constantly annoyed by a very obnoxious FMC - she had her moments, but those were few and far between -, this would have been a 2-star rating at best.

The FMC was annoying as h" Read more of this review »

Stylistically, these stories are not for me. Paired with the author's background and maybe some greater context around ghost stories/horror of the era, these stories might bring about a more academic interest. ...more
