J.E. Erickson fell in love with horror and fantasy at an early age. The first story he wrote was at age 11 and was about a child walking home from school to discover his own gravestone. He still thinks about it when referring to himself in third person.

He currently writes horror and fantasy stories, and lives in an old house in the Midwestern United States with a nerdy soap maker, two spoiled dogs, and a (potentially) possessed vegetable garden.

His debut novel "Offerings to the Flower Moon: The Tale of the Abrams Witch" released in 2022. You should totally read it.

I think most writer's block comes from places of self-doubt, lack of preparation, and not feeling like you're asking the right questions of your characters. At least for me it's these things.

What I do is just freewrite. I have a document that exists solely for me to smear word vomit upon. I kill characters, give them their deepest desires, change them in some fundamental way -- anything I can do to discover who they are in a little more depth. It's all stream of consciousness, no subject too taboo, not worried about editing content. It's helped put me in a workable headspace, as well as generate ideas and characters for other stories. If you don't find what you consider your acceptable level of failure on your project (labor of love or otherwise) you can find yourself spinning your wheels on it forever.

Finish what you write. Write something else. (less)

Eye strain, you strain, we all strain for...

I don't think that's how the rhyme went. The Olympics are over, and now my life must return to normal. Boo.   I buy myself a new pair of eyeglasses every two years. Ever since I managed to find a job that provides medical insurance, I make it a point to take care of my eyes. I come from a long line of glasses-wearers, and we couldn’t always afford them. All I could manage was a single pair to carr Read more of this blog post »
