If you ask what I am, my response will be one word – forgiven.

If you ask who I am, I’ll tell you I’m a musician and writer, a husband for almost 20 years to my wife Lia, and a dad to three amazing young adults: Chris, Marcus, and Naomi.

If you ask what I do, I’ll mention that I play the piano. A lot. I also teach, and now I write.

Now for the story:

For many years working as a church staff musician and as a performing artist and pianist, I struggled with the tug-of-war between my faith and my career. Finally I decided I wouldn’t choose – I would do both. I also learned that I wasn’t alone. Other artists were dealing with the same thing. So I started writing about our struggles on my blog, http://www.GodandGigs.com.

Balancing Artistic Dreams and Financial Wisdom: A Guide for Faith-Driven Creatives

As creatives and entrepreneurs, we often find ourselves caught between two extremes when it comes to money: either viewing it as the root of all evil, or desperately chasing after it as the ultimate measure of success.

But what if there’s a middle ground?

A place where we can steward our finances wisely while still pursuing our God-given dreams?

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Katie J

John Ruskin
“There is no music in a rest, but there is the making of music in it. In our whole life-melody the music is broken off here and there by "rests," and we foolishly think we have come to the end of the tune. God sends a time of forced leisure, sickness, disappointed plans, frustrated efforts, and makes a sudden pause in the choral hymn of our lives, and we lament that our voices must be silent, and our part missing in the music which ever goes up to the ear of the Creator.

How does the musician read the rest? See him beat the time with unvarying count, and catch up the next note true and steady, as if no breaking place had come between.

Not without design does God write the music of our lives. But be it ours to learn the tune, and not be dismayed at the "rests."

They are not to be slurred over nor to be omitted, nor to destroy the melody, nor to change the keynote. If we look up, God Himself will beat the time for us. With the eye on Him, we shall strike the next note full and clear.”
John Ruskin

G.K. Chesterton
“These are the days when the Christian is expected to praise every creed except his own.”
G.K. Chesterton

Albert Einstein
“The fanatical atheists are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who—in their grudge against traditional religion as the "opium of the masses"—cannot hear the music of the spheres.”
Albert Einstein

David Cutler
“Traditions that cease to evolve render themselves irrelevant or obsolete. And what's the problem with inventing new performance practices? Are customs being slandered? Do successful alternative diminish the value of traditional ones? *The argument that musicians must embrace conventional rituals is just as perilous as unilaterally rejecting them.*”
David Cutler, The Savvy Musician

C.S. Lewis
“The very condition of having Friends is that we should want something else besides Friends. Where the truthful answer to the question "Do you see the same truth?" would be "I see nothing and I don't care about the truth; I only want a Friend," no Friendship can arise - though Affection of course may. There would be nothing for the Friendship to be about; and Friendship must be about something, even if it were only an enthusiasm for dominoes or white mice. Those who have nothing can share nothing; those who are going nowhere can have no fellow-travellers.”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
