Not only was it well-written and engaging, but it was the best example I have found of how to use two first-person narratives in the same book, making it two books for the reader. I can't wait to see what she has done with the new one.(less)

My first thoughts go to a fictional pair coupled by crime, Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty. I was devastated when that relationship ended. Good villains should be hard to get rid of, and that’s something I’ve tried to use in my own writing.

But the word “couple” is often used to denote a male and female pair, and that can easily become a romance. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for romance, as long as it’s hopeless, desperate romance, like Romeo and Juliet. I don’t know how many times I saw the fictional film about Count Sparre and his mistress Elvira Madigan, but I cried every time. Especially after I visited their very real graves in Denmark. It’s the hopeless romances that get me, the ones that end in death, and I find it sometimes enters into the characters I write about. I won’t speculate about why.
