There are many stories about the Second World War, yet this one, since it is told from the view of a young girl captures the innocence of the those times. The confusion, fear and uncertainty as well.
Hannah does not understand why the Ogres hate her, why she cannot stay with her best friend and why she and her family must spend their family fortune to leave Germany. ‘But I am German’ she thinks, why am I suddenly wrong?
The girl in the present, Ana, is a lot like her Great Aunt as she cares for her mother and assumes adult responsibilities. Until one day they receive a letter from Cuba asking them to come and learn their family history. Ana has never met her father and is eager to learn about him.
This story grips you with a myriad of emotions. I find myself wanting to shake both of the girls’ mothers as they both focus more on themselves than on others around them. I want both girls to find love and to be successful despite their family and the war around them and being hated for their religion.
I really liked the irony of Hannah having her picture on a German magazine and being called the ‘German Girl’ because she has blond hair and blue eyes when in fact she is Jewish and the very thing that the Germans hate.
I was surprised by the ship they boarded from Germany to Cuba. It was described as being luxurious, fine dining, nice cabins and even dances and entertainment. I really doubt that those being expelled from Germany would have these accommodations. Especially given the recession Germany was in at the time.
When they reached Cuba and the governments’ reaction to them reminds me of the Syrian refugees today and countries closing their doors to them. This novel adds a humane perspective to what the refugees must face when they have travelled so far on hope to be denied a new start.
I wonder why the author chose to have the mothers as weak and emotional. Why both young girls lost their fathers?
A very captivating novel that is relevant for any time period. How do you survive when you have lost everything?
