Raised in a big working class family (ten children).
When I was in my thirties, my sister and I wrote a novel, with me as writer, and my sister as editor. At the time, I was proud of the story. We submitted it to a midsize publisher. Their response was succinct and brutal. Like a knife to the heart. Our book was laid to rest in her basement on a shelf in the back in the corner in the dark. In retrospect, it was where it belonged.
However, also in retrospect, we did not fully understand the process of submitting a novel to a publisher. We did not know how important an agent was during that age of author processes when trying to publish a story.
