I picked this up expecting either a compelling love story or an insightful novel about life behind the Iron Curtain. Unfortunately, it ended up being neither.

First of all, calling this “A Love Story” feels misleading. There is barely a relationship to invest in. There is no chemistry, no real romance, and certainly no love story that carries the book.

My biggest issue, however, was the protagonist herself. I found her calculating, self-centered, and, honestly, deeply unlikeable. It was difficult to sympathize with someone who repeatedly makes questionable decisions and then acts as if life simply happened to her.

If you’re hoping for an authentic portrayal of life under communism, this probably isn’t it either. The heroine constantly emphasizes how privileged and comfortable her life was. Rather than being trapped by the system, she often seems to create her own problems. That made it even harder to connect with her or see her as a tragic figure.

Ironically, I felt much more sympathy for the young poet. The novel seems determined to convince the reader that he somehow failed her, but I never really saw convincing evidence of that. She knew exactly who he was before marrying him. He never promised wealth or stability, appeared to care about his children, and simply came across as an idealistic, somewhat irresponsible young poet. Meanwhile, she hides her pregnancy from him, lets her parents dictate her choices, and ultimately returns home without even trying to talk to him about his possible infidelity anyway. Throughout the novel, he felt like the least blameworthy person in the story.

The ending left me with the same feeling as the rest of the book: “So… that’s it?” After everything, she ends up back where she started. Sweet daddy palace with servants, power and money. It made the entire journey feel emotionally flat and ultimately pointless.

Overall, this novel falls into an awkward middle ground. It isn’t a convincing romance, it isn’t a particularly insightful historical novel, and its main character is too difficult to root for. I finished it feeling disappointed rather than moved. ...more

Dann habe ich die Goodreads-Rezensionen gelesen und festgestellt: Nein, das liegt nicht an mir. Das Buch liest sich einfach unglaublich zäh. Besonders schade, weil die Prämisse eigentlich großartig klingt: Eine junge Frau zieht nach München und wird Assistentin eines bekannten Verlegers. Da dachte ich sofort: Super, München! Verlagswelt! Neue Stadt! Neues Leben! Leider bekommt man von München ungefähr drei Dinge mit: die S-Bahn, eine Wohnung mit Isarblick, die der Hauptfigur nicht einmal gefällt, und ihre endlosen Joggingrunden an der Isar. Die Tagesroutine der Hauptfigur besteht gefühlt aus Arbeiten, Joggen, Musik machen, Schlafen und wieder Joggen. Zwischendurch läuft sie an Fenstern vorbei, beobachtet glückliche Familien beim Frühstück und beneidet sie um ihre Nähe – nur um wenige Seiten später wieder zu betonen, wie gut sie eigentlich allein klarkommt und dass sie niemanden braucht. Nach dem zehnten Mal hatte ich nicht das Gefühl, eine Figur kennenzulernen, sondern dieselbe Szene immer wieder zu lesen. Der Verlag selbst bleibt dabei erstaunlich blass. Der Chef hätte genauso gut eine Zahnarztpraxis, eine Werbeagentur oder einen Baumarkt leiten können.

Mein größtes Problem war aber die Hauptfigur. Anfangs konnte ich mich noch gut mit ihr identifizieren: neue Stadt, keine Freunde, Unsicherheit. Aber je weiter ich gelesen habe, desto mehr hatte ich das Gefühl, das Tagebuch einer sehr anstrengenden Dreizehnjährigen zu lesen. Sie ist ständig einsam, aber niemanden braucht sie natürlich auch. Ihre Eltern unterstützen sie, aber sie verstehen sie angeblich nie. Alle sollen ihre Probleme lösen, nur sie selbst unternimmt kaum etwas. Als die Eltern einen Therapeuten empfehlen, denkt man als Leserin irgendwann: Ehrlich gesagt haben deine Eltern vollkommen recht. Das Buch möchte, dass ich mit ihr mitleide, aber irgendwann wollte ich sie nur noch vorsichtig schütteln und fragen, ob sie schon einmal darüber nachgedacht hat, Verantwortung für ihr eigenes Leben zu übernehmen. Auch die Beziehung zu Bo blieb für mich erstaunlich blass. Die beiden wirken von Anfang an eher wie Menschen mit völlig unterschiedlichen Lebensvorstellungen als wie ein Paar, für das man mitfiebern möchte. Sie trennen sich, kommen wieder zusammen, aber weder die Beziehung noch Bo selbst gewinnen genug Tiefe, um daraus wirklich etwas Interessantes oder Berührendes zu machen.

Dazu kommt, dass auf über 300 Seiten erstaunlich wenig passiert. Dieselben Gespräche, dieselben Gedanken, dieselben Joggingrunden, dieselben Konflikte. Fast alle Nebenfiguren bleiben blass, aber besonders die Frauen. Sie verschwimmen zu einer einzigen grauen Masse ohne erkennbares Profil. Keine von ihnen hat wirklich Charakter, keine entwickelt sich, keine bleibt im Gedächtnis. Und was mich besonders irritiert hat: In einem Roman voller Frauen gibt es praktisch keine einzige Frau, die dem Verleger ernsthaft die Stirn bietet oder klare Grenzen setzt. Dabei wäre genau das interessant gewesen. Ehrlich gesagt hätte das Buch dringend eine strengere Redaktion gebraucht. Wenn man die Wiederholungen streicht, verliert man vermutlich die Hälfte der Seiten, aber keinen einzigen wichtigen Handlungspunkt. Dazu kommt noch ein Stilmittel, das mich irgendwann regelrecht in den Wahnsinn getrieben hat: Die Autorin durchbricht ständig die vierte Wand und erklärt den Lesenden, was später noch passieren wird oder was die Figur gerade noch nicht weiß, aber bald erfahren wird. Nach dem zwanzigsten Hinweis dieser Art dachte ich nur noch: Danke, ich hätte die Geschichte eigentlich gern selbst entdeckt. Statt Spannung aufzubauen, nimmt der Roman sich immer wieder die Luft aus den eigenen Reifen. Stattdessen hätte daraus vielleicht ein wirklich starker Roman über Arbeit, Burnout, Ehrgeiz und Neuanfänge werden können. So blieb bei mir vor allem die Erleichterung zurück, dass ich das Buch aus der Bibliothek ausgeliehen hatte und nicht selbst gekauft habe. ...more
