The story behind The Name of the Wind is that a man named Chronicler has set out to find Kvothe. Kvothe is the stuff of legend, and Chronicler wishes to record his true story. The majority of the story is verbally recited by Kvothe as Chronicler records it all.
Rothfuss organizes the book very interestingly. The main part of the book is told through Kvothe’s storytelling, and it should be noted that the entire book takes place over the span of roughly three days. However, Kvothe’s story captures roughly seven to eight years of his personal history. His story is occasionally broken up by the normal functions of the inn such as men coming and going, Kvothe needing to refill supplies, and etc. These disruptions are labeled as intermissions by Rothfuss to help the reader distinguish between the present and Kvothe’s story. Rothfuss does an excellent job weaving together the different events that have taken place throughout the story.
What I love about this book is its ability to captivate my imagination and really get me thinking about what is going on. One of its strengths is that Kvothe is a very relatable character. There are moments where I feel like I would’ve done the exact same thing as Kvothe in a certain situation, yet some situations are just too out of the ordinary that I can’t help but feel jealous for Kvothe’s abilities. For example, there’s a moment where Kvothe is able to play natural events such as “sun setting behind the clouds…” and “wind turning a leaf” (Rothfuss 141). As a musician, I can appreciate and understand moments like these. Rothfuss does an excellent job of capturing the complexity of the human emotion and the simplicities of human interaction.
With the publication of the Name of the Wind, Rothfuss is described as “the great new fantasy writer we’ve been waiting for…” by Orson Scott Card. I agree and go on to further say that The Name of the Wind is going to be the beginning of a new generation of fantasy. It will introduce the reader into an entirely new world that will undoubtedly capture imaginations. Also, this book does not shy away from engaging the reader intellectually. If given the chance, The Name of the Wind will change how you perceive the world and will even help you develop a greater appreciation for it. ...more "
