It's a rather curious answer. At the time I was actually writing my first book, Blood, Bone and Stone, when I happened upon a book which was historical fiction, based on Marie Antoinette's life, called Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund. It was in the dollar bin at our local library, where they sell books outside. I had always been interested in Marie Antoinette and so I bought it. While reading it, I became so engrossed in the book, that I found myself writing for her (Marie). From there, I read nine more books. I added a section for Marie to Blood, Bone and Stone; however, I soon realized that my section was a book unto itself. Therefore, one could say that my first book, Blood Bone and Stone gave birth to the second one though Temple of Love was published first. A corollary to the how I became interested in Marie Antoinette is that I happened to go to school with a girl who was related to her. (This was when I was about ten). She brought in a tea cup and saucer for show and tell, which had the Queen's signature on the bottom. Now you may think this child was haughty about being related to her, but no, she was proud of it, but also a very sweet and kind person. She was one of those people you just don't forget, so in writing this book, I thought of her often, and hoped that she would feel some sense of honor. Connections like that can make a work not only evocative, but deeply personal. (less)
