Written in 1987, LJB was still able to write a good mystery at this point. But for me, protagonist James Qwilleran (Qwill) ruins the book. Quite frankly, Qwill is an arrogant, self-centered jerk throughout.

He has a stronger reaction to the renovation of the Press Club than his own Aunt Fanny's untimely demise. Even though she has adopted him as her Nephew, he keeps telling everyone who will listen that she's not really his Aunt, forcing everyone in town to defend Fanny's choice of heir to her own Nephew.
While dating Rosemary, he eyes almost every woman who wanders across his path, the leggy blondes on the beach, the buxom Mildred, Melinda Goodwinter, and even reminisces over how attractive his former girlfriends were.
And I think it's sad that LJB knocked off Fanny Klingenschoen so that Qwill could become "the richest man in the northeast central United States". I know it's a murder mystery, but there was already a plot afoot with the Charter Boat dumping prisoners into the water.
So why muddy the cold waters of Mooseville by killing Francesca Klingenschoen? Why not let her live a few more years, then give her estate to Qwill, and spend the rest of her days travelling the world? Why kill her?
Although LJB could still write a decent murder mystery at this point, there are too many things here that take away from the plot. And although Qwill still has a personality here, it's not a very nice personality....more
