Hoogland schrijft sinds zijn twaalfde, indertijd geïnspireerd door het vroege werk van Stephen King. Na een reeks horror- en science fictionverhalen begint hij zich vanaf 1998 toe te leggen op realistisch proza. Minder bloed, meer engagement - min of meer.

In 2002 verschijnt de bundel 'Steen' bij Uitgeverij Eigen Boek (www.eigenboek.nl), waarvan enkele verhalen teruggrijpen naar de horror van weleer. Andere verhalen, met name het muzikale titelverhaal, blijken een voorbode voor het in 2003 uitkomende 'Solo', een komische roman over een muziekfanaat die zich koppig tracht te verzetten tegen de verantwoordelijkheden die het volwassen worden hem opdringen.

Begin 2014 besluit Hoogland om de best geslaagde pennenvruchten dan maar zelf uit te geven. Zodoende zijn inmiddels de kerstnovelle 'Navidad Rouge' en de sadothriller 'Noodweer' verschenen bij Brave New Books.

In 2015 verschijnt zijn nieuwste roman, 'De Glorieuze Comeback van Kevin Steen', een existentiële liefdesthriller over de grens tussen fantasie en waanvoorstelling. Met dit lijvige boek verenigt Hoogland de horror uit zijn begintijd met het luchtige coming of age-materiaal van de jaren daarna.

Begin 2017 verscheen de non-fictiebundel 'XP', waarin wordt teruggekeken op videogames die door de jaren heen indruk hebben gemaakt op Hoogland. Bij wijze van uitbreiding is hij in 2018 op zijn blog begonnen met wekelijkse artikelen over - in dit geval vaak recentere - games. De bedoeling is deze stukken uiteindelijk in een nieuw boek samen te brengen.

Naast schrijven maakte Hoogland in het verleden ook muziek, te weten onder de naam ManicM. Bij het Alkmaarse label U-Lit heeft hij 2 albums uitgebracht, ook leverde hij bij tijd en wijle een tekstuele bijdrage aan het werk van rapper Stone E, waaronder de 'mass murder ballad' 'Bittere Frits' (te vinden op YouTube). ...more

Mijn jongste roman De Glorieuze Comeback van Kevin Steen is nu te krijgen op Bol.com. Dat is leuk voor mij natuurlijk, maar misschien vraag je je af wat jíj daar dan mee moet.
