Un-Home

I've just finished a new, short zine, for which I set myself the challenge of completing all the work in seven days: taking the photographs, selecting and editing them, and laying out the zine. The title, Un-Home, alludes to Freud’s famous essay on the uncanny, in which he suggests that both ‘homely’ and ‘unhomely’ are possible synonyms for this word. The images here don’t fit the notion of the un Read more of this blog post »

Jonathan Walker and 1 other person liked Matt's review of Keshed:
Keshed by Stu Hennigan
"This kind of novel is why I read. Only a working-class librarian with ADHD could write the relentless, searing, and beautifully crafted debut novel that is Keshed. Hennigan manages to make his experiments with language and narrative form accessible a" Read more of this review »

This is an excellent compilation of work from several related projects originally created in the 1970s and 80s by Myers, all in b+w using a large-format 5x4 camera (and I imagine all on a tripod). There's brief commentary throughout: very blunt and o ...more

Not much text in this. Some bland, general advice on photography, although you wouldn't go wrong following any of it, and you can see how it informs the featured images, so perhaps it does what it needs to. I bought this mainly as a budget way to get ...more

George Saunders
“His mind was freshly inclined toward sorrow; toward the fact that the world was full of sorrow; that everyone labored under some burden of sorrow; that all were suffering; that whatever way one took in this world, one must try to remember that all were suffering (none content; all wronged, neglected, overlooked, misunderstood), and therefore one must do what one could to lighten the load of those with whom one came into contact; that his current state of sorrow was not uniquely his, not at all, but, rather, its like had been felt, would be felt, by scores of others, in all times, in every time, and must not be prolonged or exaggerated, because, in this state, he could be of no help to anyone and, given that his position in the world situated him to be either of great help, or great harm, it would not do to stay low, if he could help it.”
George Saunders, Lincoln in the Bardo

James Kelman
“Ninety-nine per cent of traditional English literature concerns people who never have to worry about money at all. We always seem to be watching or reading about emotional crises among folk who live in a world of great fortune both in matters of luck and money; stories and fantasies about rock stars and film stars, sporting millionaires and models; jet-setting members of the aristocracy and international financiers.”
James Kelman
